Saranac Village at Will Rogers will hold chess games every Wednesday, beginning on Wednesday March 14th with Chess Master Swarren Lohr.
Swarren has been a Life Member of the US Chess Federation since 1968 and was the New York State Class B winner in 1998. He began two chess clubs, previously one in Rochester, NY and one in Newburyport, MA.
This club will include the teaching of chess as well as play. Lessons will begin at 6 p.m. for those interested or for bettering current play. Open games will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played with tournament quality sets, boards and chess clocks.
All materials will be provided as well as refreshments. The club is free and open to all, however, children should be accompanied by an adult. Please call 518-891-7117 for more information.
The first class on May 9th will be free and the cost is $30 for the six week session from May 16th through June 20th (free to Will Rogers’ residents). The Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center (ADAC) will host a support group at Saranac Village at Will Rogers on the 4th Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. beginning on June 23rd. This group provides a confidential venue for discussing the challenges associated with being a caregiver and provides support and education concerning the diagnosis and its impact upon family structure and relationships.
The ADAC offers an array of programs and services to support and assist individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders, as well as their families. They provide comprehensive diagnostic assessment, education and support for care giving families. The ADAC provides support groups in six different locations in the North Country.
The Saranac Lake Support Group is lead by Samantha Marocco, a Physical Therapist with advanced degrees in Gerontology and Geriatrics. She is a full-time faculty member at Utica College in the Post-Professional Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Samantha also works per diem for Adirondack Medical Center as an inpatient therapist. Her academic interest and research interest is in memory/dementia and motor learning. She has authored a home study course for physical therapists on Alzheimer’s disease titled Implications for Physical Therapists through the Geriatric Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Saranac Village at Will Rogers is an independent retirement community providing services such as three meals a day, weekly laundry and housekeeping, activities, transportation, twenty-four hour staff, an emergency response system and more for those ages 55 or older.

The Saranac Lake SkatePark is close to being built and the Village of Saranac Lake has declared May 2013 as SkatePark Month. Help raise money to complete the park and help invest in our downtown.
